old SAN DIEGO Chargers Logo

Book folding is an arts and crafts technique where you measure, cut and fold the pages in a book to make an image that is based on a black and white silhouette. I was introduced to book folding by my mother. When she asked me if I thought I could create some silhouettes to create new patterns that people had asked her about but there were no patterns available that matched what they wanted. I’ve picked up a couple of programs that are used to create these patterns and these are the final results of some of the patterns I’ve created.

This was made for someone’s grandmother who is still a big chargers fan. They wanted the old San Diego Chargers logo with the “San Diego” part being very important. That alone made it okay for me to go through with creating the pattern since yes I’m very bitter that the team left the city that I live in and supported them from to a city I HATE!!! Not really much to say about the making the pattern I just took the old logo made it black and white then filled in a few spots to make it look a little bit cleaner.

This was a personal Project where I wanted to make a very detailed pattern then fold it myself to see what I could do for some possible original art and book folding patterns in the future. All I have to say is I’m never doing this pattern again. Besides being WAY too detailed the measuring alone almost took 100 hours to complete I also don’t think books this large hold details, as well as I, was hoping. I used a copy of A Dance with Dragons to make this but it had a broken spine and the pages started to slouch. I learned a lot about how much detail to include and I hope my next project turns out much better. This one was a little disappointing.

I created a little collection of pictures as I worked on this project on Twitter.

This was the first patterns that I made for my mom’s book folding projects. Once I picked up the program I needed to create patterns for book folding risking my first project on something that someone was paying for seemed too risky. As a bit of a joke since my mom had already created two other Jesus patterns that she bought the pattern for I decided why not make the Buddy Christ image from Dogma? it turned out much better than I anticipated but none of my mom’s religious friends would ever want it, unfortunately.

Chef Paulito Logo and Character

This was another logo and a character as well made for a friend. His online handle is of course “Chef Paulito” so I put together the name with a nice chef hat and gave it a little of my own outline flare. I don’t remember whose idea it was to make the character in that pose with the knife and giant pan as a shield. The idea came about because he’s a big fan of Spartacus so mixing a chef with an ancient Greek warrior made a lot of sense to me. Everything came together fairly quickly. He also mentioned that he wanted Jacksonville Jaguar color scheme since he’s a big Jaguar fan so the background has some kitty spots colored teal and orange… ish.

The plan with these was to use them on his twitch, youtube, and other social media outlets to start making online gaming content. He still has and was working a full-time job at the time and I think he had more than one when I made this Art. That kind of took a lot of time away from setting up the streams and channels so he never used them.

Cal-Diego PVA Annual Report 2009

Cal-Diego PVA’s annual report was always an interesting project for me I was able to work on it over a few months instead of the normal 3-4 week scheduled of the newsletter. This allowed me some freedom to be a little artistic as long as all the vital information required by a nonprofit organization was included inside.

I probably spent more time on the 2009 annual report than any other year. Coming up to when the annual report needed to be collected I wanted to out do my previous years work. I worked hard over a few months making every piece of art used in this design as perfect as could be.

Southwestern College Sun March 2005 sports page

This is a page from my college newspaper while I was the editor of the sports page. This page won a couple of awards.

Southwestern College Sun April 2005 sports page

In this issue of the school paper I had the opportunity to have one of the best feature writers on the paper write a piece for the sports section. Along with our photo editor who also worked as an off road racing photographer contributing a piece, I had the opportunity to have a lot of fun with the sports section this time around.

Southwestern College Sun Summer 2005 sports page

During my second semester as the sports page editor I was lucky to have a retired pro baseball photographer join the news paper staff. The paper also took on some new advertising methods that allowed us to use color for a few inside pages as well as the usual front page color. With the quality art from the baseball team that was actually performing really well, I was lucky enough to get the inside color pages assigned to my section more often than not.

Another sports page with color photos. This was during my Last semester as an editor on the paper when I was lucky enough to have more writers than I could fit in each issue. Around this point, I realized I did not want to peruse journalism as a career but instead wanted to focus on graphic design.

Bros on the couch logo

This was a personal project for a friend as I worked on this logo for him and a few other friends who were putting together a gaming clan, with the possibility of branching out to streaming and youtube gaming content. I walked him through my creation of this logo and how to recreate the branding to be consistent over time.

After that most of the art on the bros on the couch twitch pages was handled by them.
